(Sensitive phases and training: the importance of not burning stages).

Been a long time since we published the last post, this is due to the start of the busy sports season and the preparation and programming of the new course. This fact leads us, season after season, in front of an inescapable reality: What should I get in each category and stage? What do I have to do to get it? If I do this I will be exceeding? If I do this may not be enough? Nowadays there is competition from Children category (A: 11-12, B: 9-10 years), in addition to traditional Cadet and Junior. What should we pursue in each of the categories?

These (especially the first two) could be called educational categories. That is to say, in these categories the main thing that we must pursue is the comprehensive training of athletes, although it should be a constant throughout the sporting life. Having said that, the next step is to find a way of acting, shaping our intervention, the What and the How. To do so, we must use the knowledge that the Motor Sciences offer us and base our programming on the sensitive phases of development for Motor Skills and Physical Abilities. In other words, we must search the ontogenetic period with predisposition (trainability) for the development of a specific skill or ability. This can sometimes be at odds with getting sports scores near term.

Here, we present a table that shows the motor skills associated with each age, which should be the basis for programming the contents of the teaching-learning process (training).

Looking at the table carefully, we can conclude that the ages corresponding to the categories of the Child and Cadet are identified with stages of specific skills acquisition of the modality. With this in mind, in these stages we must focus on implementation, stabilization of a specific motor pattern of taekwondo. This acquisition should respect a progression that obeys the succession of stages within a stage.

So, at first, for the transitional stage between basic and specific motor skills, we must focus our action on the generalities of the movement. The explanations and tasks must be focused on the "primary" and "rudimentary" idea  of movement, with general expressions. Secondly, as they are acquiring motor patterns similars to the desired one and the pupil internalizes the execution, we turn to more specific tasks, paying attention to qualitative aspects of the movement. It is important to differentiate these two stages, since the proper performance of the movement will depend on the previous and general idea that the pupil has of it, that is, it is necessary that the movement has meaning to him. For example, before going on to explain that in Chagui Bandal we must lift and rotate the kickstand (without nailing the heel) the pupil must understand that we are executing a semicircular kick and that it is very important to hit laterally.

When these phases are overcome we will enter in the last stage, which develops specialized motor skills. If we have made a correct work in previous stages the athlete will have a good command of execution and good body awareness of the movement. Now we can work on variations, details, specifications and adjustments. If we have worked well, if we have respected the work steps, specially considering the sensitive stages of our athletes, we can now enjoy a good technical basis that enables a good adaptation to the competition and we can create a good system of personal combat. Because at the end of the day, promoting the development of various resources in an athlete does not mean forcing him to repeatedly execute a large number of technical resources, but to teach and train these resources in order to form a solid base of motor skills.

As is the Motor Skills case, we know there are sensitive developmental stages for the Physical Abilities.

  • Resistance: aerobic endurance can be trained from the start of the activity. The anaerobic contents should be trained after puberty.
  • Strength: the Speed Force can be stimulated from the 8 years with dynamic weightless efforts  (running, jumping, etc.). During puberty there is a large structural development that will allow us to meet and develop strenght contents.
  • Speed: the speed can be worked from 6-7 years. However, for the development of the gestural speed (acyclic) will need to wait for the maturation of the muscular and nervous system after puberty.
  • Flexibility:  passive methods can be used from the earliest stages of the activity, but the important thing about this quality is that it is involutive, it is an ability that deteriorates with age. Because of that as the athlete gets older more should we insist on flexibility work.

At the same time, we need to know the stage of cognitive development of the subject. This allows us to regulate tasks, organize them, explain them and do the same with the contents. For example, we can not work tactical contents which require a large capacity for abstraction and hypothesis formulation if the subject has not reached the formal operations stage. That is, the pupil can not give innovative solutions to the various problems using the tools at its disposal. For this reason, in the stage of concrete operations, we should present and work the different contents (contraatques, attacks, links, fenders, etc) presenting them visually and focusing the "keys" on execution. We must make a more "guided" work before trying to work solving problems.

To end the article, we present a case that the neuroscientist Susan Greenfield explained. This is the case of a 6 years Italian boy, blind in one eye. Ophthalmologists were not capable to find the cause of his blindness, because the  organ was in perfect condition. After researching his medical history, they found that as a baby he had taken the eye bandaged for a couple of weeks because of an infection. This fact caused that the nerve cells that communicate the eye with the brain  fell into disuse and made the Nervous System "close" the neural path at a critical time for the development of this. The result was a permanent blindness. This is a great example of the adaptability of the organism to different stimulus, especially in sensitive periods.
